Sermon Series:
This week, pastoral elder Eric Byrom continues our journey through the book of Hebrews. Pastor Eric asks, "On what do you base your assurance of salvation?"
Sermon Passage: Hebrews 3:1-19
Sermon Outline
Remember your past confession of Christ as a basis for faithfulness rather than a basis for assurance!
1) Faithfulness flows from a clear and healthy view of Jesus! (3:1-6)
A) A doctrinally sound view of Jesus
B) Cultivating intimacy with Christ through prayer and obedience.
2) Faithfulness involves choosing obedience based on trust in God. (3:7-12)
3) Faithfulness grows from an encouraging association with the community of faith. (3:12-19)
Questions for Discussion and Application
- On what do you base your assurance of salvation? What are the outward signs that you are saved? What are the inward signs?
- What does it mean to have clear and healthy view of Jesus? Which side do you struggle with more: doctrinally sound view of Jesus or intimacy with Jesus through prayer and obedience?
- How do you think having an evil, unbelieving heart could be evidence that we have never really come to know Christ as our savior? What are the evidences of this that we should be careful to avoid?
- Why is it important to be in a community of faith in order to avoid the deceitfulness of sin? What ways have you seen this work in your own life?
