Sermon Series:
This week, pastoral elder Eric Byrom looks at the closing verses of the book of Habakkuk. These last verses should be looked at in their context and as the conclusion to the issues raised throughout the entire book.
Sermon Passage: Habakkuk 3:16-19
Joy in God alone defeats the idols of our lives!
- Joy in God alone brings us from questioning to quietness. (v. 16)
- Joy in God alone brings us from living on bread to living on the word of the Lord. (v. 17-18)
- Joy in God alone brings us from being subject to the high places to destroying the high places. (v. 19)
Questions for Discussion
- How do you think Habakkuk goes from anguish in verse 16 to joy in verse 18? Have you experienced this in your life?
- How might joy in God alone lead us out of questioning God and our situation to quietness and patience? How have you experienced this in your life?
- What does it look like to be exuberant in God even though everything is falling apart around us? Do you understand what verse 17-18 are pointing at in your own experience? Have you seen someone who has epitomized this whom you can look to for a reference point?
- Verse 19 uses the verb “tread on” in regards to the prophet’s own high places. High places were places where idols were sacrificed to. How might finding joy in God alone lead to the final destruction of our own “high places” where we have relied on other things besides God?
- What is God leading you to do, remember or change in response to what you heard today?
