Sermon Series:

This week, pastoral elder Matt Godsil talks about "Fruitues": Fruit Virtues. If you are thinking he has invented a new word, he has. Pulling from one of the most common passages in the Bible, listen or watch and see how Matt brings the fruit of the spirit and virtue together.

Sermon Passage: Galatians 5:22-23

Sermon Outline

  • Through a faith in which you place your life, trust, and obedience in Jesus, we do not come under the power of the law, but we begin to live virtuous lives, producing fruits of the Spirit, which in themselves are virtues.
  • the laws of the Torah are good. They are wise; Paul says, "In fact, they can all be summarizedas Jesus did, in the command to love your neighbor as yourself." But the laws, good as they are, did not give Israel the power to obey them.
  • So when a persontrusts in Jesus and lives in dependence on the Spirit, his life becomes theirs, and produces what Paul calls "the fruit of the Spirit." This requires intentionality. This is our part. This requires our will to step with the lead of the Holy Spirit. We have to learn how to prune off our old habits and cultivate new ones.

Questions for Discussion/Study

  1. What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word "virtue"?
  2. How important is character in Christian discipleship?
  3. Can you think of places in the Bible that talk about character and virtue?
