Study/Discussion Questions

  1. Where did Jesus challenge your thinking the most in this passage…
  2. was it about the seriousness of sin or where it begins (the heart)?
  3. In this passage, how does Jesus move the focus from outward behavior to the heart? Why do you think that shift matters?
  4. What’s the difference between an isolated sin and a pattern of sin? Why is it important to recognize that difference?
  5. Jesus uses strong, even shocking language about “cutting off” what leads to sin. What do you think He’s trying to communicate about the seriousness of dealing with sin?
  6. The sermon emphasized, “remove the trigger.” What are some general examples of wise boundaries or guardrails Christians can put in place to avoid sin?

Personal accountability questions

(For groups of 2-3 of the same gender)
(NOT for Circle Church)

For deeper honesty: make time to talk with a trusted friend. Talk about where you need accountability right now… especially in areas like: Sexual sin - Thought life - Hidden struggles

  1. Looking honestly at your life, is there a sin that has moved from an isolated moment into a pattern?
  2. What are the common situations, emotions, or environments where it shows up?
  3. What are some specific “triggers” that tend to lead you toward sin (time of day, loneliness, stress, access, certain relationships)? How aware are you of them before you stumble?
  4. Jesus calls for drastic action to remove what leads to sin. What is one practical step you know you need to take… but have been avoiding?
  5. How does knowing that God responds to repentance with forgiveness and joy (not disappointment) change the way you approach your sin?
