Sermon Series:

This week, pastoral elder Matt Godsil speaks about the news that is brought to the shepherds in the field of the birth of Jesus and the awesome way that the news was delivered.

Sermon Passage: Luke 2:17-20

Discussion Points from the Sermon:

  1. Shepherds were at the lowest end of the social and religious scale.
  2. The region of their Pasture held relative significance to the Jewish Sacrificial System and the Temple itself.
  3. An angel of the Lord appears, marking a significant change to how God will relate to his people.
  4. The Heavenly Host is not a choir, but an army.
  5. The prophecy and the Good News was told first to the Shepherds away from everyone else. Then the Shepherds ran to experience what they had been told.
  6. After they received and experienced the Good News, they went about to share with anyone who would hear it, while praising and making God known.

Questions for Group Discussion

  1. How does this story impact how you might see those viewed as the lowliest of our society today?
  2. What changed in the role of angels in scripture at the birth of Jesus, and why might that be so significant?
  3. What have we done, either individually or corporately with the Good News we have both heard and experienced?
  4. How might we each Share like a Shepherd in the week ahead and beyond?
